球状になった藻の一種。レイアウトに加えると可愛らしい雰囲気を作れる。弱い光でも問題なく飼育できるが、高温には弱いので注意が必要。また水流やエアレーションを当て続けると分解してしまうので落ち着いた水槽向け。

自然下では丸いコロニー状になることは稀で、販売されているものは人工的に丸められたもの。
日本では天然記念物のため、天然物は入荷しない。
